monohybrid crosses Flashcards
1
Q
monohybrid cross
A
- cross between parents with different alleles for a single gene
2
Q
genetic diagrams
A
- show how characteristics are inherited
- show genotype and phenotype of a cross between parents
- generations (p1 , f1, f2)
- alleles shown with capital (dominant) and small (recessive) letters
- represented by two letters
3
Q
punnett square
A
- represents a cross between two organisms
- predicts probability of genotype and phenotype
- the characteristics of the offspring can be determined by the allele of each gamete
- phenotype, alleles shown (upper case dominant)
- recessive only expressed in offspring when homozygous
4
Q
mendel’s experiment
A
- mendell tested over 28000 pure-breading pea plants (1856-1863)
- he tried to establish alternative forms of traits
- transferred pollen grains from tall to short pea plants, not allowing for self-pollination
- collected and sowed the seeds
- f1 generation grew to tall plants
- self-pollination for f2 growing to 3/4 were tall
- short characteristics did not disappear
