Monocyte-Macrophage Series Flashcards
Name the three major cell types found in the RES
Reticulum cells Endothelial cells Free macrophages (or histiocytes)
Lives 5 general functions of the RES
Phagocytosis Humoral defense Hematopoiesis Storage Metabolism
Describe the two major functions of the macrophage
Phagocytosis to clear up organisms and remove damaged/senescent cells
Participation in the immune response by trapping Ag and processing them into more antigenic form stimulating Ab production
Describe the nuclear and cytoplasmic appearance of the monoblast
N: round to oval (or irregularly shaped) w/ fine chromatin; no presence of granules
C: light blue to gray in color
Describe the nuclear and cytoplasmic appearance of the promonocyte
N: irregularly shaped, folded, brainlike convolutions w/ fine to lacy chromatin; fine, burgundy colored granules
C: light blue to gray in color
Describe the nuclear and cytoplasmic appearance of the monocyte
N: variable (round, horseshoe, kidney bean) w/ foldes producing brainlike convolutions w/ lacy chromatin; granules giving appearance of ground glass
C: blue-gray in color, may have pseudopods
Describe the nuclear and cytoplasmic appearance of the macrophage
N: eccentric, kidney or egg-shaped, indented, or elongated w/ fine, dispersed chromatin; numerous burgundy colored granules
C: irregular borders; may contain ingested material
Describe the two major functions of the macrophage
- Phagocytosis → clearance of organisms and removal of damaged/senescent cells
- Participation in the immune response → trap Ags and proccess them into more antigenic form which stimulates Ab production
