Monocyte-Macrophage Series Flashcards
A Complex System- Essential for Body Defense
Reticuloendothelial System (RES)
Name the Three Major Cell Types Found in RES, and the Organs in Which They are Seen
- Reticulum Cells
- Spleen, Lymph Nodes, and Bone Marrow - Endothelial Cells
- Spleen, Lymph Nodes, Bone Marrow, and Liver - Free Macrophages (or Histiocytes)
- Spleen, Bone Marrow, and Lungs
Name the Five General Functions of the RES
- Phagocytosis
- Humoral Defense
- Hematopoieisis
- Storage
- Metabolism
Name the Monocyte:
12-18 microns; Light Blue to Grey Cytoplasm; Round to Oval Nucleus, may be irregularly shaped
Monoblast
Name the Monocyte:
12-20 microns; Light Blue to Grey Cytoplasm; Irregularly Shaped Nucleus, May have brain-like convolutions
Promonocyte
Name the Monocyte:
12-20 microns; Blue-Grey Cytoplasm, may have pseudopods; Variable Nucleus, may be round, horseshoe-shaped, or kidney shaped/often has folds producing brain-like convolutions
Monocyte
Named the Monocyte:
15-80 microns; Cytoplasm is abundant with irregular borders, may contain ingested material; Eccentric, kidney or egg-shaped nucleus/indented, or elongnated
Macrophage (Histiocyte)
What are the Two Major Functions of Macrophages
- Phagocytosis
- Clearance of organisms
- Removal of damaged/senescent cells - Participation in the Immune Response
- Trapping Antigen and processing into a more antigenic form… which stimulates Antibody production
