Inhalers??
Particularly used it asthma.
•preventer inhaler (blue) - reduce inflammation and sensitivity of airways.
•reliever inhaler (brown) - muscle relaxants for immediate relief or symptoms.
•purple inhalers are a mixture of both the blue and brown.
Medication??
Antibiotics to treat infections; steroid treatments to relieve symptoms; anti-inflammatory medication reduces swelling and inflammation.
Peak flow??
Used to measure the rate of exhalation.
For asthma, measurements are taken regularly over time and compared with Norms, to indicate dilation/construction of airways.
Physiotherapy??
The treatment of injury, illness or disability by physical methods such as through massage and exercise.
Spirometry??
A test that measures how well the lungs work by measuring how much air is inhaled and exhaled.
Oxygen therapy(mainly for COPD)??
- pulmonary rehabilitation - a special programme of exercise and education.
- ambulatory oxygen therapy - the use of portable oxygen when walking or other activity.
- long-term oxygen therapy - the use of oxygen at home from a portable tank, taken through a mask or nasal tubes, should be used 16 hours a day.
effects on lifestyle for respiratory malfunctions??
PIES
- give up smoking
- diet: well balanced(healthy weight)
- may need to move to a one-story house
- avoid pollution and infections/triggers for asthma
- having to move around with an oxygen cylinder to assist breathing
- emotion and social impacts of not being able to complete daily tasks or go out socially, for example may lead to depression, anxiety or stress.
Care needs for respiratory malfunctions??
- regular checkups, e.g. asthma clinic
- vaccinations(cystic fibrosis) to avoid infections
- dietary supplements
- lack of energy and breathless on any activity
- install a stair lift as cannot walk up stairs
- may need to use a wheelchair
- oxygen cylinder to assist breathing
- home help for daily living tasks
