Gaseous Exchange Flashcards
What does the gaseous exchange consist of??
Role and structure of the alveoli wall
Diffusion gradients
Erythrocytes
Plasma
What is the role and structure of the alveoli wall??
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli. The walls of the alveoli are very thin and each alveoli is surrounded by capillaries through which gases are exchanged.
What is diffusion gradients??
The capillaries have a lower concentration of oxygen than the alveoli. This results in diffusion of oxygen - from an area of higher concentration (the alveoli) to an area of lower concentration in the red blood cells (the capillaries).
What is the role of Erythrocytes during gaseous exchange??
(Red blood cells) transporting oxygen via haemoglobin to the body tissues.
What is the role of plasma during gaseous exchange??
Transporting carbon dioxide that is produced by the respiration of lungs.
