Monitoring the environment Flashcards
Who makes sure that animals and wildlife have have everything they depend on
It’s the role of the environment agency
What effects do humans have on the environment
Urbanisation
Agriculture
Deforestation
(This results in a decrease in biodiversity)
What does intensive farming mean
It’s farming that uses methods to get as much yield form as small a space as possible
What does intensive farming involve
Fertilisers
Pesticides
Disease control
Battery methods
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using fertilisers
Advantages
Increase yield of the crop
Disadvantages
Can wash out of the soil and pollute rivers and streams
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using pesticides
Advantages
Prevent pests from eating or competing with the crop, so increases the yield
Disadvantages
Can destroy non-pest organisms
Chemicals may stay in the crop and be eaten by humans
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using disease control
Advantages
Prevents loss of animals and crops to disease
Disadvantages
Antibiotics given to animals may remain in the meat when it is eaten by humans
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using battery methods
Advantages
More animals can be kept in a given space
Animals use less energy and so need less food
Cost are reduced so the meat can be sold cheaply
Disadvantages
The animals quality of life is very poor
What is Bovine Tuberculosis
Bovine Tuberculosis is a serious bacterial disease of warm blooded animals including cattle
Why is bovine tuberculosis a problem
Badgers can catch bovine TB and pass it on the cattle
Give some examples of why some people object to badger culling
They believe that animals have rights and that culling is inhumane
They think evidence that badger culling is effective is unreliable
The believe that farmers could use more effective and humane ways to protect their herds
Except badger culling give some examples of how we can control bovine tuberculosis
Vaccination
TB testing for cattle are sold
More control over cattle movement
Culling infected herds of cattle
How can streams and river be polluted
Sewage and fertilisers used on farm land can be washed through soil and drain into rivers and streams
Chemicals can leak into rivers that are near factories and industrial sites
Warm water which is used to cool machinery in factories can also get into rivers (the heat cases increase growth in bacteria)
Acid rain running off the land pollutes fresh water
What does sewage and fertilisers cause when drained into river and streams
The levels of oxygen fall killing animals that need a lot of it
Bacteria which feed in sewage or dead organisms multiply and use up the available oxygen
What does chemicals cause when leaked into rivers and streams
The ph of the water lowers
Animals die as they can only survive in a narrow range of ph
