Genetics Flashcards
What are the advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified (GM) crops
Advantages
Crops can be created to cope with the harsh conditions in developing countries
Crops provide biofuels
Disease resident crops could increase the yield
Disadvantages
Genes in plants have unforeseen side effects
They could spread outside farms and becomes weeds
If a single company produces GM crops they would have control over the price
What is genetic engineering
Genetic engineering also called genetic modification is the transfer of genes from one species to another.
The new gene is incorporated into the DNA of the host organism the the host produces the proteins coded for the new gene (example of this soya been plant)
What must scientists data be
Repeatable and reproducible
Based on a large sample
Unbiased
