Mongolia / Western Europe (pre-Portuguese Iberia) Flashcards
Genghis Khan (Temujin)
One of the most influential men in world history. Would go on to transform the world.
Was enslaved as a young child. Mongolian from specific subgroup of Mongols focused on specialized hunting instead of the usual patoralists. Comes out of slavery. Became Leader of Mongolia. Had a very small army. Manage to create an absolutely massive empire in terms of land mass and people controlled. Manage to accomplish (in terms of empire) in just a few years what took the roman empire centuries to do. Dominated most military battles. After he conquered areas, he would preserve good things about conquered areas such as Chinese statues. He managed to take out cities with great efficiency. His military strategies were the best of its time. The mongol hunting techniques he learned growing up was adopted to warfare. Managed to turn those hunting techniques into a science.
Instituted religious tolerance. Outlawed torture, which was unthinkable at the time in Rome. Made provisions for the poor, widows, and orphans. Great person by all accounts. Europeans looked up to him. Shaped up the map as we know it today as he drew the national boundaries of China and North Korea. Descendants of Genghis Khan would go on to rule in India and other places. He is the reason why people wear pants instead of togas. Life would not the same today without his influence.
