What did the U.S. do in retaliation to Sputnik?
The U.S. funds math and science in school and the space program. NASA was created.

What was the Cuban missile crisis of 1962?
The U.S saw the soviets had missiles in Cuba pointed at the U.S. JFk and created a blockade to prevents supplies being shipped to Cuba. They also pointed their missiles in Turkey at the Soviets. (Almost WW3)
How was the Cuban missile crisis resolved?
The Soviet Union and the U.S. both agreed to remove their missiles from Turkey and Cuba.
What is HUAC?
House Un-American Activities Committee, created by Joseph McCarthy. It questioned the accused of communism.
Truman Doctrine
The U.S. provided political, economic, and military aid to countries threatened by Communists.
What did the Marshall Plan do?
provided economic recovery for western Europe so they didn’t resort to Communist aid
What is NATO?
An alliance with the U.S. and Western countries to defend from Soviet attack
Korean War 1950 - 1953
The North invaded the South to spread Communism. (The South was a republic at the time.) The U.S. and the United Nations intervened to help the South.

The U.S.
Who was North Korea supported by?
China and the Soviets
Who won the Korean War?
no one, there was no treaty signed. The war is technically ongoing. The war started to gain territory and ended where it started (38th parallel.)
What made segregation legal?
The court case Plessy vs. Ferguson was issued in 1896 and it was a Supreme Court ruling that made segregation lawful.
What is civil disobedience?
when you protest in a nonviolent way
Why is the Brown Vs. Board of Education Case significant?
it progressed to the Supreme Court and overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson case. It forced public schools to integrate race.
How did the South react to the Brown Vs. Board of Education Case ruling?
The southern states did not agree with the new policy and would close public schools. Many segregationists vowed to disobey the ruling.
What was the purpose of the 1963 March on Washington?
The purpose of the 1963 March on Washington, led by Martin Luther King, was to gain support for John F. Kennedy’s civil rights law.
How did the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 change society?
It reshaped society to be inclusive towards multiple races. It worked to gain equality for all races.
