Momentum And Reaction Flashcards
What is momentum?
Momentum is a property that all moving objects have, it is defined as the product of the objects mass and velocity.
What is the conservation of momentum?
In a closed system, the total momentum before is the same as the total momentum after.
How does a force change momentum?
When a resultant force acts on an object for a certain amount of time it causes a change in momentum. The faster the change happens, the bigger the force causing the change must be and vice versa
What is stopping distance?
Is the distance it takes the car to stop a car. It is divided into thinking and braking distance.
What is thinking distance? What is the two factors that affect?
Thinking distance is the distance the car travels in the drivers reaction time.
- your reaction time–> increased by tiredness, alcohol, drugs and distractions.
- your speed–> how fast your car is traveling at.
What is braking distance? What are the four factors that affect it?
Braking distance is the distance taken to stop once the brakes have been applied.
- your speed–>the faster you go, longer it is to stop
- the mass of the car–> less mass=less force
- the condition of the brakes–>faulty brakes won’t be able to stop with much force
- friction that is applied–> more likes to skid if the road is dirty.
What test can determine your reaction time?
The ruler drop test.
Someone will drop a ruler between your thumb and finger, with your arm resting at a level. They will catch it and where there finger is you record the distance and time. The longer the distance, longer the reaction time. A typical reaction time is between 0.2-0.6s
