Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum?
Momentum is the product of mass and velocity. It is also a vector, meaning it has a size and direction.
What is the formula for momentum?
momentum (kg m/s) = mass (kg) x velocity (m/s), p=mv.
What is change in momentum?
When a force acts on a moving object, causing its velocity to change, this is a change in momentum.
What is the formula for change in momentum?
Force=change in momentum/ change in time. Then you can rearrange it to get: change in momentum=force x change in time
How does the force size affect the change of momentum?
The larger the force, the faster the change in momentum, meaning more injury. The smaller the force, the slower the change in momentum, meaning less injury.
What safety features do cars have to try and slow down the change in momentum when there is a crash?
1) Crumple zones.
2) Seat belts stretch.
3) Air bags.
