Momentum Flashcards
When does a change in momentum happen?
When a force is applied to an object that is moving it or is able to move. The total momentum stays the same.
What does the momentum of an object depend on?
The direction of travel
The momentum of an object can change if…..
- the object speeds up or slows down
- the object changes direction
What does it mean when momentum is conserved?
As long as no external forces are acting on the objects involved, the total momentum stays the same in explosions and collisions. Momentum is conserved.
A suitcase travels on a conveyer belt. What happens to its momentum if it speeds up?
It increases.
What happens to the suitcase’s momentum if it goes around a corner?
It changes
What is the momentum of a 2kg object travelling at 4 m/s?
8kg m/s
An object with a momentum of 12kg is travelling at 3 m/s. What is its mass?
4kg
What happens to the total momentum of a fire work when it explodes?
It stays the same.
A 3kg trolley travelling at 2 m/s hits an identical but stationary trolley. They stick and move off together. What is the new speed?
1 m/s
Trolley A is 4kg and moving at 3 m/s. It hits trolley B, which is 2kg but stationary. If only trolley B moves, what is its speed?
6 m/s
