Moments and Levers Flashcards
you need to loosen a nut. there is a spanner with a short handle and another with a long handle, which one is easier to use? why?
the one with the longer handle. becuase the longer the handle, the less force you need to exert on it to loosen the nut
what is the moment?
when a force applied to an object makes it turn about a pivot (turning effect of the force)
what happens if there’s a larger force?
the larger the moment (turning effect)
what happens if there’s a larger perpendicular distance from the pivot to the point where the force is applied?
the larger the turning effect
how do we increase the moment?
increase the force, increase the distance from the pivot
in terms of levers, what is the weight of an object called?
the load
in terms of levers, what is the force a person applies to the lever called?
effort
what is a force multiplier?
a force multiplier exerts a greater output force than input force eg using a crowbar, the effort needed to lift an object is only a small fraction of its weight
what is the point about a lever turns called?
a pivot
what is the line of action?
the line that a force acts along
what is the equation for moment?
moment, M (Nm) = force, F (N) x perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot, d (m) - (obvs u can rearrange this equation)
principle of moments
clockwise moments = anti-clockwise moments
