Q

Why can a machine not be a force and distance multiply at the same time

A

As energy is conserved, if force is doubled the distance is hard and vice versa

Q

What three things can wheels do when passing power from wheel to another

A
  • Increase speed - first gear has more teeth than second so second has to turn faster to keep up
  • Increase force - second gear has more teeth than first so second turn slower but with more force
  • Change direction - when gears mesh they always turn in the opposite direction
