Moments Flashcards
Definitions
What is a moment?
A moment of a force is the turning effect of a force.
to be calculated, we must identify a pivot.
Definitions
What is a pivot?
A pivot is a point around which all the turning is done.
Moments
What is the Equation for a Moment?
The moment of a force can be calculated by the product of the applied force & it perpendicular distance from the pivot.
Moment = Force (N) x Distance
Moments
Factors that affect moments:
There are 2
- Force
- Distance
Types of Moments
What are the types of moments?
- Clockwise moments
- Anti-clockwise moments
POM
What is the principal of moments?
For a body in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments equals the sum of the anti-clockwise moments
POM
What are the 2 equations of POM?
- ΣCM = Σ ACM
- Σ upwards forces = Σ downward forces
Σ (sigma) is a symbol generally used to denote a sum of multiple terms.
Equilibrium
Define Equlilbrium
- No turning effect is observed when moments are balanced.
- A body is therefore said to be in equilibruin when all the clockwise moments (CM) & anti-clockwise moments (ACM) are balanced.
