Force & Extension - Hooke's Law Flashcards
ELASTIC & PLASTIC DEFORMATION
What is a deforming force?
A deforming force is one that can be used to change the shape or size of an object.
ELASTIC & PLASTIC DEFORMATION
What is Elastic Deformation?
Deformation is elastic if atoms or molecules return to their original position when deforming forces are removed.
ELASTIC & PLASTIC DEFORMATION
What is Plastic Deformation?
Deformation is plastic if atoms or molecules in a material do not return to their original positions when deforming forces are removed.
Hooke’s Law
What does Hooke’s Law state?
Hooke’s Law states that the extention is directly proportional to the load or applied force provided that the elastic limit is not exceeded.
Hooke’s Law
What is the equation for Hooke’s Law?
& formula
In equation form: x∝y / y∝x
Formula: F = kx.
Hooke’s Law
What does k refer to in the formula
F = kx?
k refers to the constant of proportionality or the spring constant
Hooke’s Law
What graphs represent Hooke’s law?
Graphs of F vs. X or X vs. F
Hooke’s Law
What is the elastic limit?
This is the point after which the material no longer obeys Hooke’s Law and it becomes permanently extended.
