Molluscum Contagiosum Flashcards
What causes molluscum contagiosum?
• Caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), a type of poxvirus
How is molluscum contagiosum transmitted?
• Direct contact with infected skin (sexual, non-sexual, autoinoculation).
• Indirect contact via contaminated fomites (e.g., shared towels).
What is the incubation period for molluscum contagiosum?
• 2-12 weeks.
Is molluscum contagiosum self-limiting and how long g does recovery take ?
Yes, it is self-limiting and benign, Resolves within 18 months in otherwise healthy individuals. Does not persist as a latent infection.
Who is most commonly affected by molluscum contagiosum?
• More common in children, followed by adolescents.
What is the typical presentation of molluscum contagiosum lesions? (3)
• Smooth-surfaced, firm, dome-shaped papules
• Flesh-colored or pearly white with a central umbilication (dimple).
• Size: 2-5mm in diameter.
How long does it take for molluscum contagiosum lesions to develop and how many can appear?
• Develop over a few weeks, Can range from 1-30 lesions, often in clusters.
Where are molluscum contagiosum lesions commonly located in children?
• Typically found on the trunk and flexures.
Where are molluscum contagiosum lesions commonly located in adults?
• Lesions appear on the genitalia, thighs, and lower abdomen (often from sexual contact).
How does molluscum contagiosum present in immunocompromised individuals?
• May have over 100 lesions, Presentation may be atypical
What complications can occur as a result of molluscum contagiosum ? (6)
. Psychological distress
•Skin reactions
•Scarring
•Secondary bacterial infection
•Ocular complications e.g. follicular conjunctivitis
•Hypersensitivity – can evolve to abscess
How is molluscum contagiosum managed? (2)
. Usually self limiting
. Antibiotics or topical steroids can be given if spots are problematic or infected.
What practical measures can be taken for patients with molluscum contagiosum to help with symptoms ? (3)
•Keep affected area covered if swimming e.g. waterproof plaster/bandage
•Hold damp towel against skin, cool baths, use emollient
. Avoid squeezing/scratching spots
What practical measures can be taken for patients with molluscum contagiosum to reduce the spread of infection? (3)
•Use condom while having sex
•Do not share baths, towels, clothing, bedding
•Avoid contact with people who are immunocompromised, pregnant or infants
