Molecular Mimicry & Autoinflammatory Disorders Flashcards
What is another name for streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS)?
Group A Streptococcus
What are examples of disorders caused by molecular mimicry autoimmunity?
- Acute Rheumatic Fever
2. Guillain Barre Syndrome
What bacteria causes Acute Rheumatic Fever?
Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep)
Describe Acute Rheumatic Fever
Usually occurs 2-3 weeks after GABHS pharyngitis. It develops as a result of cross-reactive antibody leading to inflammation of the heart, joints, brain, and vascular tissues.
Symptoms vary but common ones include aschoff body (heart nodules), fever, carditis, and arthritis.
Describe Guillain Barre Syndrome
Follows after campylobacter infection. Due to damage of PNS.
Symptoms: muscle weakness
What are examples of AUTOINFLAMMATORY diseases?
Periodic Fever Syndromes (usually resolves with age)
- Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF)
- PFAPA (most common PFS in the US)
