Molecular interactions Flashcards
Ionic bond characteristics?
Charge-Charge bond
Electrostatic interactions
can be salt bridges
Covalent bond characteristics?
Result of e- sharing instead of transfer. Overlapping of e- radius= intermolecular distance shorter than Vander Waals radius.
The electronegativity difference defines the bond.
Differences in electronegativity defined?
0-0.4= Covalent bond 0.4-2.0= Polar covalent bond >2.0= Ionic bond
Vander Waals interaction characteristics?
Arises when neutral groups carrying dipoles (or partial charges) approach.
H-Bonding characteristics?
Involves donor where H+ has partial positive charge. Shorter distance of H-Bond reflects partially covalent nature of H-Bonds.
Hydrophobicity effects?
Occurs between molecules that cannot interact with water.
Ex-Oil and water: Oil is nonpolar, the molecules coalesce together through Vander Waals interactions and minimize surface area in contact with water.
