Molecular Biology Flashcards
What is molecular biology?
Molecular biology explains living processes in terms of the chemical substances involved.
What is the relationship between genes and proteins?
The relationship between genes and proteins are at the heart of molecular biology
What components involve molecular biology?
DNA, RNA, Proteins
How are molecular biologists involved?
Molecular biologists are involved in breaking down various biochemical processes of a living organism into its component parts (reductionists approach).
Some biologists that the reductionists approach cannot explain everything. When component parts are combined there are emergent properties that cannot be studied without looking at the whole system together.
Urea and falsification of vitalism
Vitalism is a doctrine that the processes of life are not explicable by the laws of physics and chemistry alone and that life in some part self determining.
Friedrich Woler first to synthesize urea synthetically with silver, isocynate, and ammonium chloride.
Metabolism
Metabolism is the web of all enzyme catalyzed reactions in a cell organism. Metabolism consists of pathways by which one type of molecule is transformed into another chain reactions and cycles.
Metabolism - Anabolism
- Catabolism
Anabolism is smaller molecule to larger ones.
Catabolism is larger molecules to smaller ones.
Carbon
all living things contain carbon in some form. Carbone atoms can form 4 covalent bonds allowing diversity of compounds to exist.
4 main classes of carbon compounds
Carbohydrate (2:1 ration)
Lipids
Proteins
Nucleic Acids
