Molars Flashcards

1
Q

Upper right molar identification markers?

A

Multi-rooted via furcation, 3 roots diverting from a common root stalk ( double at buccal side ) - distobuccal root same plane as palatal root
Palatal root strongest and longest, compressed bucco-lingually
4 cusps
Diamond (linger = mesiobuccal to distopalatal), Parallelogram, trapezoid shape
Oblique ridge cuts through fissure running from distobuccal cusp to mesiopalatal cusp
Fissure on each side of ridge (shape of H is count slight line across oblique ridge)
Distal fissure runs along oblique ridge and continues on palatal surface (this distopalatal cusp separate from red of occlusal surface)
Mesial fissure right angled, runs towards mesial side and towards and down the buccal side
Buccal cusps similar in size but mesial slightly larger, palatal mesial cusp largest and palatal distal smallest
Can have tubercle of carabelli on mesiopalatal cusp (60%chance)
More convex distal side

Q

Upper right second molar identification markers?

A

Smaller than first, distopalatal cusp extremely small or may be GONE (thus 3 or 4 cusps) makes the occlusal surface more triangular/heart shaped
Palatal root can be partially fused with one of the baccal roots

Q

Upper right second molar identification markers?

A

Smallest of the 3
Usually only 3 cusps
Usually 3 roots fused together into one bulky root and grooved where roots would be
May show completely unregular form with a ring of cuspules

Q

Lower right first molar identification markers?

A

5 cusps (3 buccal and 2 lingual)
Distal cyst smallest and extra
Groove starts on buccal surface (can be a pit here prime to caries) and deepens into transverse fissure across occlusal and ends as groove on lingual surface
Centre of crown has a pit
Another fissure runs mesiodistally (devided into two branches either side of small distal cusp)
Buccal surface larger than lingual and lingually inclined
Proximal surfaces convex with distal much more as of distal cusp
2 roots one mesial and one distal, both strongly compressed mesiodistally and may show distal curvature
Mesial root generally curved, grooved and broader than the distal root

Q

Lower right second molar identification markers?

A

2 roots, mesial broader but distal longer
More symmetrical and smaller than first
Usually 4 cusps of similar size
Occlusal surface almost square, and fissure pattern in a +
Lingual cusps higher
Roots less divergent than firsts and may be fused
Mesiobuccal cusp surface bellow more bulky
