Molar Comparisons Flashcards
Teeth included in maxillary molars
1st molars = 1.6, 2.6
2nd molars = 1.7, 2.7
3rd molars = 1.8, 2.8
Maxillary muccal view: give the mesio-distal crown dimensions from largest to smallest
1st > 2nd > 3rd
Maxillary buccal view: give the occlusal-cervical crown dimensions from largest to smallest
1st > 2nd > 3rd
Maxillary buccal view: compare the mesio-buccal and disto-buccal cusp widths of all 3 molars
- 1st = M-B > D-B
- 2nd = M-B >> D-B
- 3rd = M-B >>> D-B
Maxillary buccal view: compare the mesio-buccal and disto-buccal cusp heights of each molar
- 1st = M-B = D-B
- 2nd = M-B > D-B
- 3rd = M-B > D-B
Maxillary buccal view: compare the buccal developmental grooves of the molars
On 2nd molar, the buccal developmental groove is farther distal, shorter, with no pit at the end
Maxillary buccal view: root lengths
1st = 2nd
3rd is shortest
Maxillary buccal view: root separation
1st > 2nd > 3rd
NOTE: Fusion of roots common on 3rd and somtimes on 2nd
Maxillary buccal view: root curvature
Distal inclincation: 3rd > 2nd > 1st
Define the root trunk
The portion of the root located between the CEJ and the furcation
Maxillary buccal view: root trunk dimensions
3rd > 2nd > 1st
Maxillary lingual view: 5th cusp (cusp of Carabelli)
Present on 70% of 1st molars
Located on P aspect of mesio-palatal cusp
Maxillary lingual view: disto-palatal cusp size
1st > 2nd (both width and height)
Absent on 3rd
Maxillary-lingual view: disto-palatal developmental groove
Farther distal and shorter on the 2nd
Maxillary-lingual view: palatal root width
1st > 2nd > 3rd
