Modules 7-10 Flashcards
How do the nervous system and the endocrine system respond differently to maintain homeostasis?
Nervous system
- rapid response (<1 second)
- Transmits nerve impulses
Endocrine system
- slower response (minutes)
- releases hormones
What are the 5 Major structures of the Nervous System?
Brain Spinal Cord Nerves Ganglia Sensory Receptors
What are the 3 types of Nerves?
Cranial
Spinal
Peripheral
What is the difference between White matter and Grey matter
White matter is aggregates of myelinated axons (white due to high lipid content)
Grey matter is everything else
What is a chemical synapse?
A 1 way junction between neurons or between a neuron and an effector.
What are the 3 ways that the neurotransmitter is removed from the synapse?
Diffusion
Enzymatic degradation
Uptake by the pre-synaptic neuron
What is a membrane potential?
Membrane potential is the charge difference across a membrane
How are intracellular and extracellular fluid different?
Intracellular fluid has large numbers of of K+, phosphate anions, and proteins
Extracellular fluid has large numbers of Na+, and Cl-
What is the difference between an action potential and a graded action potential?
An action potential is a flow of current in the axon, graded action potentials trigger action potentials
A graded action potential is the flow of current in the dendrites of a cell body
What is hyperpolorizing graded potential?
A result of of an inhibitory neurotransmitter opening potassium channels making the MP more negative
What are the 3 basic functions of cerebrospinal fluid?
Mechanical protection
Nutrient supply
Waste removal
What part of the brain makes CSF?
The Choroid Plexuses
