Module D: Psychotherapeutics Flashcards
4 Categories of Antidepressants
1- Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
2- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
3- Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)
4- Monamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOs)
2 Categories of Antipsychotics/Neuroleptics
1- typical - HALDOL (Haloperidol)
2- atypical - CLOZARIL (Clozapine)
Adverse effects of antipsychotics
- motor abnormalities
- muscarinic and a1 adrenergic blockade
Advantages of atypical antipsychotics vs typical
- fewer motor abnormalities
- greater effect on symptoms of schizophrenia
Mechanism of Action Antipsychotics
- block dopamine and serotonin receptors
- used to Tx major psychoses (ie. schizophrenia)
Use of Antidepressants
- affective disorders - depressive and bipolar
- anxiety disorders
- sleep disorders
- chronic pain syndromes
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
ie. amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine,imipramine, nortriptyline
- block neuronal reuptake of Norepi and serotonin
- highly effective in Tx of depression
- associated with high incidence of adverse effects - severe toxicity in excessive doses ie. cardiac arrhythmia, hypotension, excessive sedation, seizures
