Module D: Immunology Flashcards
What is the function of pseudo-stratified columnar tissue?
Removing dust and particles from airways, has cilia
What is the function of simple columnar tissue?
Absorption
What is the function of simple cuboidal tissue?
Secretion and absorption
What is the function of simple squamous tissue?
Diffusion and filtration
What is the function of stratified squamous tissue?
Protects underlying cells
What is the function of stratified cuboidal tissue?
Protection
What is the function of stratified columnar tissue?
Protection and secretion
What type of tissues lines the respiratory passageways?
Pseudo-stratified columnar tissue
What types of tissues lines the uterus and most organs of the digestive tract?
Simple columnar tissue
What types of tissues lines the glands, kidney tubules and ovaries?
Simple cuboidal tissue
What types of tissues lines the lungs, walls of capillaries and vessels?
Simple squamous tissue
What types of tissues lines the skin, throat, vagina and mouth?
Stratified squamous tissue
What types of tissues lines the ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands and pancreas?
Simple squamous tissue
What types of tissues lines the male urethra and vas deferens and parts of the pharynx?
Stratified columnar tissue
Three layers ofr the skin in stratified squamous tissue?
Epidermis, dermis and hypodermis
What are keratinocytes?
A predominant cell type; differentiate as they are pushed up through epidermal layers, form squamous cells containing keratin, barrier function
What are Langerhand cells?
“antigen presenting cells” that reside in the skin (derived from monocytes), sense foreign organisms, take up antigen, travel to lymph nodes to activate the acquired immune response
What are melanocytes?
Melanocytes reside in basal layer of epidermis, contain melanin -pigment that is the major determinant of skin colour and provides UV protection
What are Merkel cells?
Merkel Cells reside in basal layer of epidermis, involved in sensing touch
