Module 9 Planning a Research Study Flashcards
Quan research problem
Emphasis on need to explain, predict, or statistically describe some outcome or event
Qual research problem
Focuses on understanding the inner world of a particular group or exploring some process, event, or phenomenon
Research purpose
Expresses researcher’s intent or objective in conducting their particular study.
Indicates population to be examined and methods to be used.
Quan statement of purpose
Declarative statement identifying the type of relationship investigated between a set variable.
Causal or descriptive.
Qual statement of purpose
Descriptive statement indicating the intent of the study is to explore or understand some phenomenon experienced by certain group at a certain site.
Mixed statement of purpose
Elements of qual and quan statements
Action study statement of purpose
Individualized statement that addresses solving specific problems that are faced in schools and communities
Research question (Research hypothesis in quan)
Statement of the specific questions(s) which the researcher is seeking to answer.
Quan research question
Descriptive, predictive, causal
Examines relationship between two or more variables
Qual research question
Usually open-ended, may have sub-questions.
Explores issue, situation, or phenomenon.
Mixed methods research question
Includes purpose: Triangulation, Complemetarity, development, initiation, expansion
Exploring, testing, or collecting qual and quan data.
Action research question
Blends qual and quan elements as needed.
Focused on driving change within context of study
Hypothesis
Formal statement of researcher’s prediction of relationship that exists among the variables being investigated.
Emerges from Literature review or theory.
Must be capable of being confirmed or not confirmed
