Module 9 - Elements of Movement Flashcards
Parts of time
Speed, Rhythm, duration, pause, accent
Parts of space
Direction, level, focus, dimension, shape, pathways
Energy
Force, flow + qualities of movement ( swinging, sustained, suspended, percussive, vibratory, collapse)
Speed
The speed in which a dancer moves
- fast, slow , constant
Rhythm
The repetition of time divided into equal or unequal units
- regular , irregular
Duration
The length of the movement
- long, short
Pause
A moment of stillness in movement
- stillness
Accent
Force applied to a particular movement for intensity
- sudden, climactic, build up
Direction
The line of direction a dancer travels
- forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonal, upwards, downwards
Level
An aspect of height
- high, medium, low
Focus
Conscious attention toward a certain point
- inward, outward, direct, indirect
Dimension
The height, width and depth of a shape in space
- large, wide, small, narrow
Shape
Shales made by the body
- curved, angular
Pathways
Combining of three or more directions to create a trail through the space
- angular, curved
Force
The range between strong and light movements
- strong and hard vs light and weightless
Flow
The range between fluent and bound movements
- fluent and continuous vs bound and stoppable
Swinging (quality of movement)
It is the over and under curved made by the arms, legs, head and torso
Sustained
Movement that is controlled and smooth with no apparent stop between movement
Suspended
A brief pause between the upward and downward pulls of gravity
Percussive
Sharp, jerky movements that usually are short in duration and result in sound
Vibratory
The consecutive repetition of small movements
Collapse
A part of the body gives way to gravity
