Module 2 - Anatomy (bones) Flashcards
1
Q
Skeletal functions
A
- Give shape and structure to the body
- Make movement possible
- Protect the internal organs
- Provide support for the soft tissue of the body
- Store and manufacture bone marrow
2
Q
3 types of bones (shapes)
A
Flat bones - such as the skull which give protection for internal organs.
Long bones - allows the system of levers to operate efficiently.
Irregular bones - Such as the vertebrae, are shapes the are general multiple bones fused together creating a irregular shape.
3
Q
What Bones are apart of the Axial skeleton?
A
Skull, Spine, Thorax (ribs and spine)
4
Q
What Bones are apart of the Appendicular Skeleton?
A
Shoulder Girdle, Arms, wrists, hands, legs, feet.
5
Q
Order of the parts of the spine
A
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacral/sacrum
- Coccyx
6
Q
Cervical spine characteristics
A
- 7 vertebrae
- Flexible
- Supports skull and neck
- Provides stability and mobility to head while connecting to thoracic spine.
7
Q
Thoracic spine characteristics
A
- 12 vertebrae
- Rigid group of vertebrae
- Holds ribcage
- Protects heart and lungs
8
Q
Lumbar spine characteristics
A
- 5 vertebrae
- bear the weight of the body
- quite mobile
9
Q
Sacrum characteristics
A
- 5 vertebrae fused
- forms pelvis by joining to hip bones
- Gives strong base of support
10
Q
Coccyx characteristics
A
- 2-4 vertebrae fused
- Immobile and insignificant function
