Module 9 - Budding Flashcards
What is the pneumonic device you came up with to remember budding types?
T-IT-Chi-P-Cha-D
What are the 6 types of budding we covered in this course?
T-Budding
Inverted T Budding
Chip budding
Patch budding
Change Purse Budding
Double Shield Budding
Define budding
form of grafting where the scion consists
of a single bud attached to a thin layer of
bark and wood
The source of the buds in budding is called
budstick or budwood
What does “slipping” mean?
When the bark is easily separated from the wood
Describe the process of budding:
Bud is inserted into the rootstock, then the portion of the rootstock above the bud is cut and a new shoot grows
What are two benefits of budding?
- fast
- makes full use of budwood
What type of trees is budding usually used for?
Ornamental or fruit trees
Budwood should be:
- true to type
- disease free
Describe the collection and storage of budding:
- Budsticks should be collected early in the
day; cells are turgid - Top of the stem and all the leaves are
removed - Stems are bundled in groups, wrapped and
sealed - Budsticks are stored at about -2
oC
Describe T budding
- shape of t 1/4-1” rootstock,
- only when bark slipping
Describe Inverted T budding
- upside down T 1/4-1” rootstock
- used in wet conditions to avoid moisture in wound
- used for citrus
Describe chip budding
- arc cut,
- deeper cut,
- when bark not slipping and tree actively growing,
- vasc.camb aligned
Describe patch budding
- rootstock and budstock bark with similar or same thickness
- rectangular cut
- bark slipping
Describe change purse budding
- 3-5” cut like change purse (vertical slit),
- bud with leaflets used,
- leaflet tied to rootstock, film used to cover bud union and leaf
Describe double-shield budding
- T cut
- 2 scions: one budstick supplies the scion, the other supplies the intershield
- intershield used to overcome incompatibility,
- scion matched to intershield and inserted into rootstock
Draw all the types of budding
What is used to wrap budding grafts?
elastic or parafilm
When are T-buddings usually done
June - Sept
What is an additional use of T-budding
bio-indexing to test for the presence of viruses
