Module 3 Flashcards
Asexual propagation
A cutting is a piece of _________ tissue
vegetative
What are the 4 cutting types?
Stem, Leaf, Leaf-Bud, Root
Why don’t you want too much leaf tissue on a stem cutting?
too much transpiration will dehydrate the cutting
What are 5 types of stems to cut from?
Hardwood,
Herbaceous,
Semi-hardwood,
Deciduous hardwood,
Narrow-leaved Evergreen
Soft-wood stem cuttings should be taken in which season?
Spring, from new growth
Semi-hardwood cuttings should be taken in which season?
midsummer, when new growth has produced a little wood
Deciduous hardwood stem cuttings should be taken in which season?
Late winter, early spring
Narrow Leaved Evergreen hardwood stem cuttings should be taken in which season?
Early winter
Where does the adventitious root come out of on a leaf cutting? (2)
Petiole or from slits in primary veins
Leaf-bud cuttings include the leaf and bud, where will a new stem come out of?
The bud
When should root cuttings be taken and why?
Late winter or early spring - time of year when most food is stored in the roots
What are some factors to consider in cuttings? Name 3 of 6
Source of cutting material
Time of year
Etiolation
Treatment with auxins
Misting
Bottom heat
What is etiolation?
- Growth of shoots with little or no light
- Stem tissue is more likely to develop roots if grown in the dark
- Theory is that in the stem you have hormone called auxin which is broken down by light. So, if you have a stem that’s been growing in the darkness you have more active auxin in stem.
It’s recommended to keep base of cuttings at ___degrees, top of cuttings at ___ degrees
24, 18.5
You will have more success if source plant has been growing in ______ _____, at a ______ ________, and accumulated ____________.
full sun at a moderate rate, accumulated carbohydrates
Why shouldn’t you take cuttings with flowers on them?
- Too much of the energy will go towards the flower to produce seeds
- Want energy to go to producing roots no reproductive tissue on cutting
Indo-acetic acid comes in two forms and is used for what?
powder or gel, stimulate root growth
What’s it called when someone “creates” a cultivar and registers it with the government?
Breeder’s rights.
