Define components of self-concept: Identity and what factors contribute to the formation of identity?

A

internal sense of individuality, wholeness, and consistency of a person over time and in different circumstances. It is influenced by age, gender, sexuality, social class, ethnicity, and culture. It develops overtime and creates the “uniqueness” of an individual.

contributing factors:
observing people and modelling their behaviour
sexuality, gender identity: psychological sense of being male or female, including sexual orientation
culture and tradition, (racial or cultural identity)

Define components of self-concept: Body image and what factors contribute to the formation of body image?

A

involves attitudes related to the body like physical appearance, structure, or function. Feelings of body image is related to femininity, masculinity, youthfulness, sexuality, health, and vitality. It is affected by cognitive growth and physical development.

contributing factors: Way other people view a persons body
cognitive growth and physical development (hormonal changes, secondary sex characteristics, aging)
cultural and societal attitudes (societal norms of body image)
reality: significant changes can cause distorted body image

Define components of self-concept: Role performance and how does role performance contribute to self-concept

A

the way an individual perceives their ability to carry out significant roles. Roles can be permanent or temporary, some include parent, child, employee, or student.

contributing factor:

  • It involves socialization to expectations or standards of behaviours. Each role involves meeting certain expectations
  • Fulfilling these expectations can lead to a better sense of self, failure to meet expectations can result in decreased self esteem, or altered self concept.

Define components of self-concept: Self-esteem and how does self-esteem evolve and change over the course of a life time

A

individuals overall sense of self-worth, representing overall judgement of personal worth or value. Emotional appraisal of self concept, how person is perceived by others.

how self-esteem evolve:

  • Usually highest during childhood because a child’s sense of self is inflated by positive sources.
  • usually declines in adolescence due to puberty, maturational changes, increased expectations.
  • During adulthood, it rises again because of focus on being increasingly productive and creative at work, while promoting and guiding the next generation.
  • mid 60s is usually the high level of self esteem,
  • around 70, it declines because of a decreased need for self promotion and a shift in self concept to a more modest and balanced view of self.

  • works with clients to help them develop healthy lifestyle behaviours that contribute to a positive self-concept

A
  • Stress is change within an individual’s normal thinking/state coming from a stressor. A stressor is a stimulus that causes an individual to experience biological or psychological reaction to it.
  • Stress is influential on health in various ways such as effects on our body actions. It reduces our chances of improving our mental health, and provokes several unnatural responses that the body normally should not do.

A

Assessment: assess cultural background, note for any behaviour indicating altered self-concept, assess coping skill, assess relationships, assess client perception of themselves

Knowledge: understand components of self concept and stressors, use therapeutic communicating principles, look for non-verbal indicators of distress, note that medication can also affect a person

Experience: caring for a client who had an alteration in body image, self-esteem, role, or identity
personal experience or threat to self-concept

Standard: support client’s autonomy, keeping your client’s info confidential

Qualities: display curiosity in client’s behaviour, display integrity when your values and beliefs differs from client’s
