Module 8 - Evidence Based Practice Flashcards
T or F: EBP must be guided by speech-language pathologists’ or audiologists’ ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and autonomy
T
The ITEA (integrating theory, evidence and action) Method
- Clinical question
- Framework: use suitable frame work or model to study the question
- Identification: Define methodology and data required to answer critical question
- Deconstruction: Sorting and classifying data into categories
- Analysis: Analyze the collected evidence critically
- Reconstruction: Rebuilding of analyzed data into coherent whole
- Transfer and Utilization: Ways in which to apply the evidence to practice and future research
Practice
Application of thoughtful reflection to help ‘grow’ that body of knowledge to be drawn upon for future professional practice.
What does this image represent
that in order to implement evidence-based practice one must have as their foundation: An understanding of the components of ethical practice (autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, justice) AND professionalism (knowledge, service, the ability to state things clearly).
Definitions of beneficence, non-maleficence, truth, fairness, autonomy, professional integrity
Physiotherapy evidence-based practice definition
Physiotherapists use evidence-informed practice to guide decisions about patient care. An evidence-informed practice integrates the best available evidence and clinical expertise with the patient’s needs and values to ensure delivery of best practice. It has application to individual patient care, practice management and the application or development of health policy.
How to formulate a good clinical question
- Ask the question (qualitative vs quantitative)
- Use PICO to write clinical questions
What does PICO stand for
- Patient
- Intervention
- Comparison
- Outcome
Example of writing clinical question scenario: A patient comes into the clinic with impacted ear wax. You recommend the over-the-counter product always recommended by your clinic called Cerumenex to help soften it so that it can be removed. Your patient’s spouse said she read that just using sterile water would work. When you say that your preference is for the patient to use Cerumenex she asks “what evidence do you have that that it is better?” Write the PICO
Go to cochrane.org for answers to clinical questions
Example of writing clinical question scenario:
What are the 4 types of literature revies and which one is the most confident and least confident
Does increasing the number of participants always increase the reliability of the study?
No, need experimental control as well to rule out biases (randomized controls)
Order of strongest evidence to weakest
T or F: Our job as a clinician is to just use EBP
F, Your job is to combine the available evidence with the Client’s characteristics and needs and your professional expertise to make a decision.
Critical Appraisal
process of carefully and systematically examining the research evidence to judge its trustworthiness, its value and relevance in a particular context.
