Symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal?
- Abnormal body sensations
- Aches/pains
- Anxiety/panic attacks
- Delirium/detachment from reality
- Depression
- Grand Mal seizures
- Insomnia
- Muscle spasms
- Nausea
Panic disorder psychoeducation?
- Individuals with panic disorder may need assistance to reevaluate lifestyle.
- Help with time management, prioritizing tasks, procrastination, relaxation time
- Learning the symptoms of panic disorder
- Information sheets or pamphlets available concerning the disorder and any medication prescribed.
- Family therapy
- Families experience the symptoms, treatments, clinical setbacks, and recovery from chronic mental illnesses as a unit
What therapy can be used for panic disorder?
- CBT first line, reframing known triggers
- Exposure/Response
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
Excessive anxiety or worry that is difficult to control
Generalized Anxiety Disorder symptoms?
- Restlessness
- Fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
- Sleep disturbances
Types of anxiety disorders?
- Separation Anxiety Disorder
- Selective Mutism
- Specific Phobias
- Social Anxiety Disorders
- Agoraphobia
What is Separation Anxiety Disorder?
Anxious due to separation from attachment figures (developmentally inappropriate)
What is Selective Mutism?
Failure to speak in social situations (consistent)
What is Specific Phobias?
Avoids specific situation/object, fearful
What is Social Anxiety Disorder?
Fear of social or performance situation in which embarrassment may occur
What is Agoraphobia?
Fear and avoidance of places or situations that might cause panic, feeling trapped, helpless, or embarrassed.
Nursing intervention during Panic Attack?
- Stay with patient (pace along)
- Ensure safety
- Clear concise communication
- Reduce stimuli
- Offer PRN meds
Nursing intervention before/after Panic Attack?
- Coping/relaxation/breathing/ distraction
- Nutrition (avoid caffeine, etc)
- Allow patient to vent
- Encourage physical activity
