Module 8 Flashcards
Manual Processing
A ‘Dark Room’ is necessary
• 1.On exposure a latent image is formed
• 2.Image must be developed to be seen
• 3.Must then be fixed to make it a permanent film
Manual Processing Development Stage 1
The radiograph is fully immersed in the developing solution which is alkalin
How long does it take for solution to oxidise
10- 14 days
What temperature should the solution and how long should it immerse?
20°C for 5 minutes, 21°C for 4 ½ minutes, 22°C
for 4 minutes
What happens to silver halide crystals?
The silver halide crystals will be converted to black metallic
silver and will produce grey/black areas of image
What happens if developed for too long or hot
Dark film
What happens if developed for too short or cool
Light film
Manual Processing Developing Stage 2
Wash to remove residual developer
Manual Processing Stage 3
Fix Unsensitized silver halide removed to show
transparent/white areas of the image
How long is fix immersion stage
8- 10 mins
Problems at fix stage
Green/yellow – inadequate fixing – eventually turns brown
Manual Processing Stage 4
Wash
Running Water
Manual Processing Stage 5
Dry
Automated Processing
Same sequence as manual processing but no wash between
the developer and the fixer as the rollers squeeze off excess
liquid
Processing faults Dark Film
Developer too concentrate
Too hot
Immersed too long
Processing Fault Blank Film
Fixed before developed
Processing Fault Partly blank film
Partially immersion in developer
Processing faults fogged film
not light tight
Processing faults faint image
Developer too weak
Temp too low
not immersed long enough
Processing fault Fading Image
Inadequate fixing
Processing Fault Loss of film
Film Stuck - poor maintenance
Processing Fault Visible Artefact
Contaminated film solution spillage
Handling Faults Scratches
Film caught on tank side
Handling Faults Fingerprints
Not held at Edge
Handling Faults Blank Spots
Splashed with fixer
Handling Faults Black line
Bent or folded film
Handling Faults Brown or green stains
Not fixed properly, old solution
Handling faults patterned film
Dried too quickly at too hot temp
Handling Faults Crystals on Film
Not washed sufficiently after fixing
