Module 7: Uniform Circular Motion and Gravity Flashcards
Define Uniform Circular motion
A particle that is moving in a circle at a constant speed.
What is necessary for any kind of circular motion?
Centripetal force is necessary for any kind of circular motion
What is the Centripetal Force Formula?
Fc = mv^2 / r Fc —> Centripetal force m —> Mass of the moving object v —> Speed of the object r —> Radius of the circle
What is the Acceleration Formula (for centripetal force)?
a = v^2 / r
Define Centripetal force.
The force necessary to make an object move in a circle
Define Centripetal acceleration.
The acceleration caused by centripetal force
On a flat curve, does the mass of the car does affect the speed at which it can stay on the curve?
No! On a flat curve, the mass of the car does NOT affect the speed at which it can stay on the curve.
What is the Law of Universal Gravitation?
Fg = Gm1m2 / r2
Fg —> Force due to gravity
G —> The universal gravitational constant = 6.67 x 10 -11 (Newton x m2 / kg2)
m1, m2 —> Masses of the objects being referred to
R —> The distance between the centers of the two objects
Define Gravity.
The attractive force that exists between all objects which have mass
Define Period (T).
The time it takes for an object in uniform circular motion to travel through one full circle
Define Frequency (f)
The number of times per second an object in uniform circular motion travels around the circle
