Module 11: Waves Flashcards
What is the wave Frequency equation?
F = v / λ
F —> Frequency
v —> Speed
λ –> Wavelength
What type of waves are sound waves?
Sound waves are longitudinal
What characteristic of a sound wave determines pitch?
The frequency (or wavelength) is the primary factor that determines the pitch.
What characteristic of a sound wave determines volume?
The amplitude determines the volume.
State the equation for the speed of sound.
v = (331.5 + 0.606 * T) m/sec
v —> Speed of sound
T —> Temperature (C)
What frequencies are Sonic Waves?
Waves with frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz (Detectable by the human ear).
What frequencies are Ultrasonic Waves?
Waves with frequencies higher than 20,000 Hz
What frequencies are Infrasonic Waves?
Waves with frequencies below 20 Hz.
What is the speed of light in air?
3.0 x 108 m/sec
What affects the speed of light?
The speed of light waves changes depending on the medium through which they travel. Generally speaking, as the medium gets denser, light waves slow down.
What is the equation for the energy of light?
E = hf
E —> Energy of the light
h —> Planck’s constant = 6.63 x 10-34 J * sec
f —> Frequency
What does eV stand for?
eV = Electron Volt
Define Wave.
A disturbance that propagates in a medium.
Define Transverse Wave.
A wave whose propagation is perpendicular to its oscillation.
Define Longitudinal Wave.
A wave who’s propagates is parallel to its oscillation.
