diversity
variety and differences of attributes among, between and within groups
multiculturalism
the integration of practices of diversity, tolerance, respect for multiple ways of knowing and being, with issues of equity and social justice
ethnicity
a way of describing social identity with a group that is based on shared history and social structure
race
a social construction involving the classification of individuals into arbitrary groups and the assignment of disparate meaning and value to those constructed groups
immigrant
refers to those who are eligible for permanent residency and includes economic immigrants, family class immigrants and refugees (government-and privately sponsored)
temporary residents:
people with temporary work permits, international students, refugee claimants awaiting decisions
culture as a determinant of health
some persons or groups may face additional health risks due to socioeconomic environment, which is largely determined by dominant cultural values that contribute to the perpetuation of conditions such as marginalization, stigmatization, loss or devaluation of language and culture and lack of access to culturally appropriate health care and services
culturally competence
a process through which nurses plan effective and appropriate interventions that address culturally specific health needs
cultural safety
defined as effective nursing practice with clients from another culture and makes issues of power explicit.
