Module 6 Flashcards
Precapillary Sphincter
ring of smooth muscle that encircles capillary and controls its diameter (controls amount of blood flow)
Hypertension
140/90 (over)
Hypotension
100/60 (less than)
Mean Arterial Pressure
average force exerted by blood against arterials walls during cardiac cycle
MAP Equation
120/80
- DBP + (0.333 x (SBP - DBP))
- 80 + (0.333 x 40)
- 80 + 13
= 93 mmHg
Hypertension (process)
due to atherosclerosis (plaque) or thickening of connective tissue of artery due to clogging of fat (plaque)
- can cause blood clots travelling to other vessels of body and can reach heart (causing heart attack)
How to prevent hypertension
name as much as you can
- regular physical activity
- weight loss
- stress management
- cessate smoking
- limit sodium, alcohol
- proper intake of potassium, calcium and magnesium
- medication (beta/alpha blocker)
Blood Pressure Equation
BP = Cardiac Output x Total Peripheral Resistance
TPR reduces during exercise
SBP first few mins in steady state
140-160 mmHg
SBP in max graded exercise
over 200mmHg
Rate Pressure Product and Equation
- Indirect index of myocardial oxygen consumption (VO2 of myocardium)
Associated significantly with both morbidity and mortality
Equation = SBP x HR
20,000mmHg for healthy and below 16,000 is not good
