Module 6 Flashcards
Exercise guidelines for CAD (5)
- low intensity endurance exercise gradually progressed to moderate intensity exercises
- avoid isometric exercises
- Begin around 40 to 50% of HRR or RPE of 9 to 11
- 30 minutes or more of continuous or interval training
- 3 to 5 days/week of aerobic training and 2 days/week of resistance training
Exercise guidelines for hypertension (5)
- primary exercise mode endurance exercise (avoid isometric exercises)
- Wait training low resistance and high number of reps
- RPE of 9 to 13 or 40 to 65% HHR
- gradual warm up and cool down
- 40 to 60 minutes/session, four to seven days/week
Exercise guidelines for diabetes (6)
- General aerobic endurance
- Twice a week resistance training using 8 to 10 exercises with 8 to 12 reps
- client should monitor glucose
- moderate intensity RPE of 11 to 14
- type 1 diabetes should gradually work up to 30 minutes or more procession otherwise 40 to 60 minutes is recommended
- 5 to 6 days per week
Exercise guidelines for metabolic syndrome (5)
- consider non-weight-bearing activities for obese clients
- 30 to 75% of VO2 reserve
- Begin at low intensity in gradually progress
- 200 to 300 minutes weekly
- 3 to 5 days per week preferably daily
Precaution / recommendations for asthma (6)
- Should be cleared by his or her physician
- have rescue medication with them at all times
- drink plenty of fluids
- avoid asthma triggers
- gradual and prolonged warm up and cool down
- peak exercise intensity based on clients condition/severity
- people with asthma often respond to exercise in mid to late morning
Exercise guidelines for asthma (4)
- upper body exercises may not be appropriate
- low to moderate intensity dynamic exercise, gradually increase intensity
- gradually progress to 30 minutes or more
- 3 to 5 days per week
Precautions for exercise and cancer (6)
- if anemic no exercise without physician clearance
- neutropinia should avoid public gyms
- frequent vomiting or diarrhea should check with physicians
- thrombocytopenia should avoid activities with fall risks
- catheters should avoid aquatic exercise
- should not exercise within 2 hours of chemotherapy or radiation
Exercise guidelines for cancer
- weight-bearing exercise is appropriate
- clients in remission and with good conditioning maybe able to increase exercise intensities, light to moderate exercise RPE 9 to 13
- progress from 10 min intermittent bouts and gradually build the 30 to 40 minutes
- Cardiovascular flexibility imbalance program performed daily, strength can be performed 2 to 3 times per week at least 24 hours rest between sessions
Exercise guidelines for osteoporosis
- include weight-bearing exercises and resistance training, exclude any jarring high impact activities
- best performed at high intensities
- loading activities be short 5 to 10 mins
- multiple bouts with adequate rest between bouts
Arthritis and exercise
- can improve daily function and enhanced quality of life
- avoid jarring exercises
- move through full range of motion at least once a day
- emphasize body alignment and proper exercise techniques
- low intensity low impact exercises
- gradually increase from 10/15 minutes to 30 minutes
Exercise guidelines for CFS
- Activities of daily living and walking, low impact
- low intensity exercise, develop regular pattern of activity
- multiple 2 to 5 minute exercise periods
- gradually billed to 30 minutes
- 3 to 5 days per week
Things to avoid for clients with LBP
Unsupported for reflection
Twisting at the waist
Lifting both legs simultaneously
Rapid movements
Recommendations for LBP
Consult with physician
Neutral pelvic alignment and an erect torso
Always bend knees
Avoid hyperextending the spine
Diurnal variation
Strength gains should be not overemphasized
Results may not occur for 3 months
Exercise guidelines for LBP
Core strengthening exercises
Light to moderate intensity
Progress to moderate to vigorous exercise
3 to 5 days per week
Specific back health exercise may be performed daily
Recommendations for pregnancy
Do not begin a vigorous exercise program
Previous active may continue their exercise program as tolerated
Gradually reduce the volume
Women who have not previously been active may need to begin slowly
Use RPE scale rather than heart rate
Avoid prolonged exercise in the supine position
Proper fluid intake
