Module 5: The Structure And Function Of Plasma Membrane Flashcards
What is triacylglyercol?
A type of storage tissue consisting of 3 joined fatty acids covalently bonded to glycerol.
What does amphipathic mean?
Having both hydrophobic (usually non-polar) and hydrophillic (usually polar) parts.
What are the 2 parts of phospholipids?
Polar hydrophilic heads (containing phosphate) and non-polar hydrophobic tails (either straight or bent)
What is a solute?
The substance dissolved in the liquid.
What is a solvent?
The dissolving liquid.
Water is the universal solvent.
What is osmosis?
The passive diffusion of water across a membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until solute levels reach equilibrium.
What is a hypertonic solution?
A solution with a high solute concentration and stronger ability to pull water.
What is a hypotonic solution?
A solution with a low solute concentration and weak ability to pull water.
What is osmoregulation?
The regulation of salt and water in the body; the regulation of osmosis.
What are the 2 types of transporter proteins?
- Channel Proteins.
- Carrier Proteins.
What is the electrochemical gradient?
The sum of both the electrical gradient and the chemical gradient.
