Module 11: The Chromosomal Basis of Inheritance Flashcards
What were Mendel’s hereditary factors?
Genes, located on chromosomes.
Who discovered the chromosomal basis of sex?
Nettie Stevens
What is the name of natural phenotypes that occur in nature?
Wild type phenotypes.
What is characteristic of hemizygotes?
A single copy of genes in an otherwise diploid cell or organism.
e.g. XY males may be hemizyotes where the Y chromosome does not contain a gene
What is the term commonly used for sex-linked genes in humans?
X-linked genes.
Because Y chromosomes tend to have less genetic material.
What is genetic linkage?
Genes located on the same chromosome being linked in inheritance.
What increases the likelihood of gene crossover for genes on the same chromosome?
The distance between genes.
The further apart, the more likely crossover is to occur between them.
What makes genetic females capable of mosaic phenotype distribution?
X factor inactivation during embryonic development.
