Challenges of
Global Cities
Cities can be sustainable because of
their DENSITY. Denser settlement patterns
yield energy savings.
Because of the sheer size of city
populations across the world, it is not
surprising that urban areas CONSUME
most of the world’s ENERGY.
Cities, especially with global influence, are
obvious targets for potential TERRORIST
violence due to their high populations and
role as symbols of globalization that many
terrorists despise.
The process whereby the
character of a poor urban area is
changed by wealthier people
moving in, improving housing,
and attracting new businesses,
typically displacing current
inhabitants in the process
because of rising rents and a
higher cost of living.
Causes can include rapid job
growth, tight housing markets,
preference for city amenities, and
increased traffic congestion.
Gentrification
refers to the
disappearance of middle-class
manufacturing jobs and spending
power as socioeconomic
stratification intensifies
Hollowing out
The _______ is an increase in
working- and lower-class households
along with a growing concentration
of wealth among the very wealthy
