Module 5 - Section 1 [Static and Dynamic Equilibrium] Flashcards
Recall the types of equilibrium
Types of equilibrium:
- Dynamic equilibrium
- Static equilibrium
Recall features of static equilibrium
Features of Static Equilibrium:
- Reaction only occurs in one direction → irreversible
- The forward and reverse reaction rate = 0
- Macroscopic and microscopic properties are unchanged
- Includes limiting reagents
Recall features of dynamic equilibrium
Features of Dynamic Equilibrium:
- Reversible reaction
- Closed system
- The forward is equal to the reverse reaction rate
- Macroscopic properties are constant
- Microscopic properties are changing
Recall macroscopic properties
Macroscopic Properties can be observed by the naked eye:
- Pressure
- Concentration
- Colour
Define steady state system
Steady State System is a system where reactants are being added and products are being removed and to an outside observer, would be at equilibrium
Define homogenous equilibrium
Homogeneous Equilibrium is an equilibrium that has only a singular state of matter
Define heterogenous equilibrium
Heterogeneous Equilibrium is an equilibrium that has more than one state of matter
Define closed system
Closed System involves the transfer of energy but not matter between the system and the surroundings
Define open system
Open System involves the transfer of energy and matter between the system and the surroundings
Relate reversibility to Gibbs free energy
ΔG < 0, the reaction is not reversible as the reverse reaction has ΔG > 0
