MODULE 5: Problems in Venipuncture Flashcards
Why should you not collect blood from sites with burns, scars, or tattoos
- Hard to palpate and penetrate
- Impaired circulation
- susceptible to infection and may interfere with tests
Describe damaged veins
Hard, cord-like, and lack resiliency de to obstruction or occlusion
Hardened vein
Sclerosed
Clotted vein
Thrombosed
People to most likely have damaged veins are:
- blood donors
- ppl. w/ chronic illnesses (cancer)
- illegal IV drug user
If there is no choice, where can you draw?
- below damaged vein
What is edema
swelling de t abnormal accumulation of fluid in tissues. happens when IV infiltrates surrounding tissues
Why should you avoid collecting from edematous sites?
- inaccurate results due to contamination of tissue fluid or altered blood composition
- veins are harder to locate, fragile, and easily injured when tourniquet is applied.
- slow healing
Swelling or mass of blood (usually clotted). leaking of blood from blood vessel
HEMATOMA
why are areas with hematoma are avoided?
- painful
- contaminated with hemolyzed blood
3.obstruction of blood flow
Why is it a challenge to collect blood from obese patients?
deep and difficult to find
tips to make venipuncture easier n obese patients
proper tourniquet selection and application. use blood pressure cuff to make vein ore prominent.
What is masectomy?
Surgical removal of breast
Stoppage or obstruction of normal lymph flow?
Lymphostasis
What is lymphedema?
swelling of arm with impaired lymph flow. This can be a complication if venipuncture is performed on the same side where a mastectomy was performed.
