What is “Coban”?
Self Adherent Bandaging Material
Steps to follow when Px have adhesive allergy:
- place clean, folded gauze square over sit and wrap with self- adherent bandaging material (COBAN).
- instruct patient to remove after 15 min.

1. let Px hold pressure for 5 min. (if mentally capable, willing)
Alternative antiseptic example:
Benzalkonium Chloride
Alternatives to latex (gloves and tourniquet)
- polyvinyl gloves or nitrile
- velcro or blood pressure cuff
What may cause excessive bleeding?
Aspirin or anticoagulant therapy. Should apply pressure but do not apply pressure bandage instead of maintaining pressure. Call for assistance if blood does not stop after 5 min.
Other term for Fainting?
Syncope- loss of consciousness and postural tone, results in insufficient supply of blood flow to brain.
Contributing factors to fainting
Anemia, Dehydration, emotional probs, fatigue, hypoglycemia, hyperventilation, medication, nausea, needle phobia, poor compromised breathing
Sudden faintness or loss of consciousness due to nervous system response to pain, stress, or trauma.
Vasovagal Syncope
Signs of Syncope
Paleness, perspiration, hyperventilation, vertigo (spinning), dizziness, light-headedness, nausea
how many minutes should a Px stay after fainting?
15 minutes, and 30 minutes not allowed to drive
It is okay to draw blood from person who is experiencing nausea.

PROBING
What to do to reduce pain?
Inform patient prior to insertion of needle. Allow alcohol to dry. Provide ice pack.
