Polarization
Focus on cultural differences. Relatively new to cultural experiences. Still preference of one culture over others. Different but not equal.
Reversal is when they prefer new culture.
Defence is when they prefer own culture.
Minimization
Focus on similarities. Implies tolerance and caring. This is the transition point to other mindsets. Easy to transfer own worldview without understanding others worldview. Cultural differences not noted.
Acceptance
Balanced and complex understanding of both the similarities and the differences. Recognize other cultures as different constructions of reality.
Adaptation
Able to shift perspective to another cultural perspective. More than understanding others POV, but also feel at home within a new way of seeing the world.
Standard forms of parental involvement
Parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, collaborating with the community.
Six barriers to family involvement.
Contextual, language, cultural, lack of understanding, lack of knowledge, exclusion/discrimination.
Cultural capital
Human, social, material resources in family and community to draw upon to help reach goals. Different families need different amounts and types. This may include advice, homework, or neighbourhood help.
Funds of knowledge
Intellectual, practical, and social resources, ethnographic investigations.
Resiliency
Social competence, problem solving skills, autonomy, and sense of purpose or future. Everyone can develop resiliency.
Denial
Experiencing ones own culture as the only one. Ignore other unknown cultures. This may be from lack of experience or a dislike of other cultures
Culture
Groups or communities that share common experiences that shape the way they see and make sense of the world.
