CALP
Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency. This is academic language.
Context embedded
When it is closely tied to surrounding physical context. Gestures, physical objects, etc.
Context reduced
When people are talking about things that are not physically present, and cannot rely on gestures, expressions, etc.
Cognitively demanding
Requires a lot of thought, such as abstract concepts, theories, and academic ideas.
Cognitively undemanding
Talking about everyday things that are very familiar to us.
General academic vocabulary
Academic words that can be used in many different subject areas. Examples include “convey, discuss, interpretation,” etc. still need help understanding these words.
Technical (or specialized) academic vocabulary.
Academic words associated with specific subject areas or fields of study. Rarely used outside of the subject area. Need to support students as they learn these words.
IRF
Initiation, response, feedback.
BICS
Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS). Jim Cummins. This is non-academic language.
