Module 5 Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscles in the body?
smooth
cardiac
skeletal
Where can smooth muscle be found in the body?
stomach urinary bladder uterus arteries veins
Where can cardiac muscle be found in the body?
in heart tisue
Where can skeletal muscle be found in the body?
with in the muscles of the body
attached to the skeleton
What are the 3 types of muscle fibers?
type l (slow twitch) type lla (fast/intermediate twitch) type llx (fast twitch)
What are the characteristics of type l muscle fiber?
slow contraction speed high resistance to fatigue low force generation red in color oxidative energy system 2+ minute activities (low intensity)
What are the characteristics of type lla muscle fibers?
intermediate contraction speed intermediate resistance to fatigue moderate force generation pink in color phosphagen and glycolytic energy system 10 sec- 2 min activities (moderate intensity)
What are the characteristics of type llx muscle fibers?
fast contraction speed low resistance to fatigue high force generation white in color phosphagen energy system 1-10 sec activities (high intensity)
Define muscular force
the force applied to overcome resistance
Define muscular strength
the ability to generate maximal force against resistance
Define muscular endurance
the ability to sustain an effort for a long period of time
Define muscular power
the ability to exert optimal force rapidly
What is the order of events prior to the sliding filament theory?
- action potential moves along alpha motor neuron
- action potential arrives at sarcolema
- action potential moves down the t tubules into the sarcoplasmic reticulum
- calcium is released
- calcium binds to troponin
- tropomyosin changes shape & the binding site on actin is revealed
What is concentric muscle contraction?
the muscle shortens as it created tension
forced generated with in the muscle to shorten it are greater than the external forces acting to stretch it
What is eccentric muscle contraction?
the muscle lengthens as it created tension
forces generated with in the muscle to shorten it are less than the external forces acting to stretch it`
