Module 4 Vocab Flashcards
Intracellular fluid
Fluid that fills the spaces between most of the cells of the body
Extracellular fluid
Fluid that is outside the cells. Includes intravascular and interstitial fluid
Osmosis
Movement of water through a permeable membrane. From a solution of lower concentration to one of a higher concentration
Hypertonic
A solution with greater osmotic pressure than another fluid that makes cells shrink.
Isotonic
A solution that causes no change in cell volume
Hypotonic
A solution with a lower osmotic pressure than another solution. Makes cells swell
Drop factor
The number of drops into the chamber required to administer 1 mL of fluid
Microdrip chamber
Administers 60 gtt/mL. Useful for children and patients sensitive to large amounts of fluids. Produces smaller drops
Macrodrip chamber
Comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 10-20 gtt/mL. Standard use for adults. Produces larger drops
Infiltration
Complication when the catheter dislodges from the lumen of the vein and fluid/medication is delivered to the tissue around the vein which can cause necrosis.
Catheter shear
When a catheter segment breaks off and is either retained in the vein or worse, obstructs the venous system.
Phlebitis
Pain from an inflamed vein
Thrombophlebitis
Inflammation of the vein accompanied by the formation of a clot
Drop factor
number of drops into the chamber required to administer 1 mL of fluid
Interstitial fluid
Fluid that surrounds cells and tissues in the body. Part of the ECF
