Module 4 Part 2: Ear, Head, Neck, Nose, & Throat Flashcards
General screening for hearing loss includes
- Whispered word
- Finger rub
Whispered Word (General screening) STEPS
- Ask patient to occlude one ear while provider stands on the opposite side
- Ask patient to repeat a word
- Whisper at a distance of approximately 24 in from their ear
- If patient doesn’t correctly identify the word, repeat at consecutively closer distances until they get it
Finger Rub (General screening) STEPS
- Ask patient to close their eyes
- Rub thumb against index and middle fingers approximately 3-4 in away from patient’s ear
- Alternate between ears and ask patient to identify which ear they hear the rubbing in
Tympanic membrane (TM)
- Membrane within the ear that separates the external ear from the middle ear
- Collecting sound waves and transmitting them to the ossicles in the process of hearing
Conductive Hearing Loss
Hearing loss caused by disruption of the transmission of sound waves through any component of passages from external auditory canal, through the tympanic membrane and through the ossicles
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Hearing loss due to a deficiency within the cochlea, involving nerve impulse transmission to the brain
Mixed hearing loss occurs when…
There is a combination of conductive and sensorineural loss
Weber Test
- Hearing test performed with a 265 Hz vibratory tuning fork
- Used in conjunction with Rinne test to help distinguish between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss
Rinne Test
- A hearing test commonly performed with a 528 Hz tuning fork
- Used to determine how the conduction of sound through the air compares to the conduction of sound through bone
Otoscopy
Examination of the ear using an otoscope, a medical device that provides amplification
Otitis
- Inflammation of the ear
- Referred to as otitis externa for inflammation of the external ear
- Referred to as otitis media for inflammation of the middle ear
